General Requirements for Non-Resident Hunters

Before applying for any tags, there are two licenses every non-resident hunter MUST have:

1. Conservation License

β€’ Required for anyone hunting or fishing in Montana

β€’ Helps fund Montana's wildlife conservation efforts

β€’ You can't hunt without it

Purchase on Montana OLS

2. Base Hunting License

Common Question: Is the License for an Archery Elk Hunt the Same as for a Rifle Elk/Deer Combo Hunt?

Yes β€” the underlying elk license is the same. Whether you plan to hunt elk with a bow or a rifle, you apply for the same core license:

  • β€’ Elk-Only Combo License or
  • β€’ Big Game Combo License (which includes both elk and deer)

The key difference is how you intend to hunt, which determines whether you also need a Bow and Arrow License.

If you're hunting archery elk, you'll need:

β€’ Elk Combo License (same one a rifle hunter would get)

β€’ + Bow and Arrow License (a $10 add-on that proves you're certified to hunt with a bow)

If you're hunting rifle elk, you'll only need:

β€’ Elk Combo License (no bow license needed)

So yes β€” the main license is the same, but archery hunters need to add the Bow and Arrow License on top.
